Stats Basics

Hello there trainers! Today we will be looking at stats and how they affect Pokemon. Stats play an important role in Pokemon battles, determining things like: which Pokemon moves first, how much damage they deal, or reduce, as well as how much damage they can take before fainting. Here's an example of a Pokemon's stats:

Here we can see a summary sheet for the Pokemon Alakazam. Highlighted in the red box is a chart of all of Alakazam's stats. I'll go over what each one means:

HP - This stands for "Hit Points", the amount of health your Pokemon has. If a Pokemon's health is reduced to 0 they will faint and be unable to battle until they are healed, either by taking them to a Pokemon Center, or by using special items. In this example Alakazam has 96/96 HP, meaning it is at full health.

ATTACK - This corresponds to the amount of damage your Pokemon will do with a Physical Attack (for more information on types of Pokemon Moves go the the Moves Page). The higher the ATTACK stat, the higher the amount of Physical damage you will do to an opponent.

DEFENSE - This stat helps reduce the amount of damage your Pokemon takes from Physical attacks, the higher the DEFENSE stat, the lower the amount of Physical damage your Pokemon will take.

SP. ATK - This stands for "Special Attack". There are two kinds of attacking moves in Pokemon, Special, and Physical. SP. ATK deals with the amount of damage your Pokemon does with a Special attacking move. The higher the SP. ATK stat, the more Special damage you will do to your opponent.

SP. DEF - This stands for "Special Defense". This helps reduce the amount of damage your Pokemon takes from Special Attacks. The more SP. DEF, the less damage your Pokemon takes from Special Attacks.

SPEED - This stat represents how fast your Pokemon is; whichever Pokemon has the highest SPEED stat gets to move first in a Pokemon battle (however there are some moves that can allow your Pokemon to go first even if they are slower).

Hopefully this answers any questions you may have had regarding Pokemon stats, but please feel free to ask if you need clarification on something. Thanks for reading and good luck training!

Oak out!
