Bug, Normal, & Grass Types

Bug Types
Bug types are often one of the first kinds of Pokemon you can run in to when starting your adventure.  Most bug types tend to evolve quickly, adding strong Pokemon to your team early on in the game, however these Pokemon tend to be weaker than other Pokemon that evolve later on in the game.  That doesn't mean all Bug Pokemon are weak, there are many very strong Bug Pokemon out there, such as Pinsir and Armaldo (those are just harder to obtain).

Strong Against: Grass, Psychic, Dark
Bad Against: Fire, Fighting, Poison, Flying, Ghost, Steel
Weak Against: Fire, Flying, Rock
Resistant to: Grass, Fighting, Ground

It may seem that Bug Pokemon are not good against much, but they are the only type that is good against both Dark and Psychic Pokemon (both types tend to have powerful Pokemon).

Normal Types

Normal types are one of the most abundant, and are easily found in many areas (especially at the beginning of the game).  Normal types are all different.  They come in different shapes and sizes and can usually learn a wide variety of attacks, through the use of TM's (items that teach Pokemon attacks).  Just because they can learn different types of attacks doesn't mean they will be effective though.  If a Pokemon uses an attack that is the same type as their own, it will do 1.5 times more damage than it normally would do.

Strong Against: None
Bad Against:  Rock, Steel, Ghost (no effect)
Weak Against: Fighting
Resistant to: Ghost (no effect)

Although they are not strong against anything, Normal types have only one weakness and can not be even touched by Ghost type attacks (but Normal types cannot touch them either).

Grass Types
There are many Grass types in the Pokemon games, and at the start of every game, you have the option to choose a Grass type out of two other types to be your first Pokemon in the game.  Grass types have the most weaknesses out of any other type, and seem to be the least effective if you look at them at a grand scale.  However it is the specific types that they are good against that make them come in handy.

Strong Against: Water, Ground, Rock
Bad Against: Fire, Grass, Poison, Flying, Bug, Dragon, Steel
Weak Against: Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug
Resistant to: Water, Grass, Electric, Ground

Most Grass types will have a second type to try to cover the weaknesses of the Grass type.

  2. Dear Pussa,
First of all, I neglected to mention just what the three starting types of Pokemon are. They are: Fire, Water, and Grass. To answer your question,I would have to say it depends on the game version you are playing. In the HeartGold/SoulSilver version(s) of the game, the first gym leader (the first boss I suppose you could say) has Flying type Pokemon, so if you choose a Grass starter Pokemon, you may have difficulty defeating him. But for another example, in the FireRed/LeafGreen version(s) the first gym leader uses Rock type Pokemon, which would be advantageous if you had a Grass or Water starter, but may be difficult if you chose a Fire type starter. But just because your starter Pokemon may not be good against the first gym leader doesn't mean you can't find other Pokemon in the wild that will do well against them. All in all, what it really comes down to is that you choose the Pokemon you like best, because you will be spending a lot of time with them training them and watching them grow :D

  3. Love your info Professor Oak, keep it up! And to this whole which one to choose at start in my opinion the best one to pick is the one that you find that either a)looks cutest at the time being or b)the one that looks coolest when it is fully evolved!
